Info on UWB Enrichment programs

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Dear Joel,

Want to enrich your career with another UW degree?

The Master of Arts in Policy Studies program is a community of people who believe policy can make a difference.

As a Policy Studies graduate student, you learn to apply social science methods and theories to real-world concerns. You use research to define and measure policy problems and to develop, evaluate, and implement solutions. Over the course of two years you become a policy actor, equipped for professional policy work in public, private, and non-profit sectors.

The program is comprised of students, scholars, and policy professionals who collaborate in policy arenas such as environment & energy, labor, education, technology, human rights, local and state government, and technology.

Classes meet two evenings a week, so you can continue to work during the day. The Bothell campus has easy access to I-5 and I-405. It generally takes 30 – 45 minutes to drive here from Seattle and is accessible by many bus routes.

Our students join the program with a wide variety of academic and professional backgrounds. Some of their undergraduate degrees include sociology, economics, political science, psychology, business, English, biology, and anthropology.

Joel, with your degree in Business Administration you already meet the basic admissions requirement. Specific prerequisites include coursework in Statistics and Economics, as well as a minimum GPA of 3.0 from your last one year of classes.

Here’s what some of our MAPS alumni say about their MAPS experience:

MAPS helped me to develop the analytic tools, and language, to consider multiple perspectives in the policy process. I learned that there are no easy policy decisions; if you find one, you’re probably forgetting some important trade-offs. This is a great program for anyone wanting to develop rigorous research and analysis skills to engage in complex social problem solving.” Mark Hammond, Social and Health Program Manager, DSHS

I really value the education and preparation that the MAPS program has equipped me with. I knew that I wanted to make a real difference in the lives of people in my community who really need it. My courses, faculty, and fellow students at the University of Washington’s MAPS program have helped me become the agent of positive change that I dreamed of being.” Analystman, Resource Development Associate, Habitat for Humanity of East King County

The most important ability of the Analyst is to absorb vast amounts of information, and then convey the most relevant points in no more than a one-page document. The MAPS degree was exactly the course of study the government desires to fill its current vacancies.” Analystman, Program Analyst, Physical Security Division, Bureau of Diplomatic Security, Department of State

The MAPS curriculum drastically improved my analytic capabilities by introducing me to a wealth of tools and disciplines, particularly the application of statistical analyses to policy problems and thorough documentation of observations, results of tests, and the making of recommendations.” Tigger, IT Business Analyst, Global Wireless by TMobile

The priority application deadline is March 1, 2008. If you start the process by submitting your online application by this date, you’ll receive full consideration by the Admissions Committee.

Please visit www.uwb.edu/maps for more information. Also feel free to call or email me for more information. I would be glad to speak to you. We’d love to have you join us!

I look forward to hearing from you.

“There are rare moments when the art form on stage speaks directly to the individual. I saw choreography so fresh and natural that it was hardly choreography at all…. It took me back to a first love defined by scent and touch, a wild heart that a chest could hardly contain, when the pressing of two palms was enough to make a life complete.
–Peter Boal, Artistic Director

Music: Sergei Prokofiev
Choreography: Jean-Christophe Maillot

Premiered in 1996 by Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, where Maillot is resident choreographer and artistic director, this contemporary interpretation is “…distinguished by its young and energetic character, its refined aestheticism and its constant musical quality. From every point of view, this remarkable version is one of the most beautiful ballets adapted from Shakespeare’s masterpiece to be seen today.” (Lifestyle). Prokofiev’s glorious score, featuring the acclaimed PNB Orchestra, provides powerful counterpoint and eloquent support to the timeless narrative.
