8:31 PM we actually had a really long talk over break about self-image and school
it was really interesting
me: hmmm…. what was your advice? or did she advise you?
8:32 PM Backum: well we were pretty much just talking about math and science
and how girls are usually steered toward reading and writing for some reason
and guys are encouraged to do more quantitative things
i was just telling her to try to stay engaged in her classes
8:33 PM i pretty much checked out after sophomore year chemistry b/c i was discouraged
me: really?
Backum: but i think it was only about confidence, not ability
me: 
sucks that you weren’t encouraged properly
do you regret it?
Backum: i don’t know
not really
8:34 PM because its not like high school defines who you are in the future
psychology at kenyon really emphasizes research
so i think i have a pretty good understanding of data and stats
psych in general made me more analytical
8:35 PM plus i never had any kind of great love for math
even before high school
i’ve loved reading ever since i learned to read so i think it was pretty inevitable that my major would focus on that

i think i have read more than anyone else i have met
i spent the ages of 7-16 buried in books
8:37 PM at one point i was reading 1-2 big ones a day… i lived out in the country and my parents wouldn’t let me do anything

me: i think that the more you do something, the more interested you become in it
business became much more interesting for me later
Backum: that’s definitely true
me: and i am starting to get into web design/programming
and i used to think i would despise that stuff

though it would have been cool to get paid to read…
though i hate editing
